Dr Pixie:
A surprising amount of you had questions about stretch marks, and a lot of you were asking, what causes stretch marks? Stretch marks are caused by stretching of the middle layer of skin that we call the dermis. Now, why do some people get more stretch marks than others? Well, some people are predisposed to stretch marks; also, people who gain weight excessively or lose weight really really quickly are predisposed to stretch marks. In addition to this, people who have specific medical conditions or take drugs such as steroids are also far more likely to get stretch marks.

Lots of you have posed the question, can you actually prevent stretch marks from forming in the first place? There isn’t really anything that you can eat or take that will prevent stretch marks forming. The best thing that you can do is be very careful about weight gain or weight loss.

You also wondered, well, were there any treatments for stretch marks? What’s effective? There are loads of potions and creams that you can buy, which can be somewhat effective in treating stretch marks, but the truth is, there isn’t really a cure. A lot of you asked about mesotherapy, which we featured in the show. Mesotherapy is a treatment whereby a doctor injects amino acids and vitamins and other medicines into the stretch mark, promoting the dermis to heal and improving the appearance of the stretch mark. Of course, like all other treatments, it isn’t 100% curative, but it can, in some cases, improve the appearance.

With regard to stretch marks, your doctor isn’t going to be able to cure you. However, if you’re really worried and your stretch marks have cropped up for no apparent reason, do seek some advice.

I am worried more will appear in other places. Are there any creams that will work for me? Am I doing anything wrong? How can I feel more confident in my bathers?

I'm 18 and 255 lbs and I've had stretch marks and problems coping with my physical appearance for as long as I remember, but when I was 12 or 13 I started to gain more weight bease of not knowing how to take care of my eating habits. It was a hard time for me to get through, but I did. I started at 180 pounds and increased to 210 and steadily gained more as time went on to 255 lbs. I was still decent looking, now that I look back on how I was and not so self conscious as I am now. I wasn't that bad, just a little on the bigger and taller side being 5'7. I've grown since then. Im now 5'8 and still getting taller. During my sophomore year of high school, I decided to try and lose weight which turned out to be a success, though with its losses. My arms had stretch marks before but now they reach past my elbows and on my forearms. There were and are still so many marks that winter seasons give me a better chance of hiding my shame. But it wasn't just my arms. My legs, stomach, thighs, hips, back, shoulders, underarms, sides, breasts, and backs of knees got very visible and light stretch marks just for a weight loss of 20 lbs that I gained back within the next two years up to now. Not only that, but my skin is also very sensitive and is prone to acne and my scars never fade away enough so they won't be so noticeable. I feel hideous. I don't know what to do with myself anymore as well. I figure if I ever did get into a romantic relationship or situation that I would scare or disgust them with my horrible appearance. My life already seems ruined at my age and it sucks to say the least. I hear that I am a beautiful girl all the time by family and friends, and even on occasion a stranger of some sort, but they will never know what I look like with my clothes off or how ugly I feel every time I step out the door to try and move on with life and look for a future of being the confident person I know I was meant to be. I'm not supposed to look this way, it just happened and I cant think of much to do about it. I hope always though there would be someone who I could open my heart to and feelings and would also love me by how I look. I'm still a human. A person who has felt and cried and hurt over how they appear to the world and what people would think of them as a person with a body that isn't that nice looking. Right now, a personality and a love for family and making others smile is what I got to give, which is all I have to give. It makes me feel worse to know that there are people who could never understand the problems people in the same or similar situation as me have. There's no one to confide to. No one to help. Nothing to do but pray that everything will be alright and to not give up. Whether it is to empower, rule, love, encourage, or be there for someone who needs you to be in this world at this moment, and I choose to not give up and hope everyone who is dealing with any situation that makes you feel hopeless to as well. I live for my family and want to do everything I can for them, but what can I do if I'm sulking on every possible thing that is wrong with myself. If I take any knowledge from what or who I am now, it is to stay strong and let your best features shine. Sometimes, relying on what is physical won't get you anywhere and you need to realize who you are as a person and what you can do to let others know that. I want to live better and do something right for myself and to gain the love I need to support others through loving myself. Everyday for people walking in my shoes is a struggle for self-love, but you're worth it. Don't let what you look like define who you are when it's not even a quarter of who you really are. Keep smiling and going on guys :)

I lost some weight recently and was shocked to find small stretch marks on my upper arms and neck. Didn't expect that to happen - I was really uncomfortable, and stopped going sleeveless. My cousin handed me a jar of the Somaluxe Stretch Mark Treatment after getting tired of my complaints, and it really helps. I put it on at night after my shower, I think warm skin helps absorb better. Don't look for immediate results, it takes 2-3 weeks before you notice a change with the Somaluxe Stretch Mark Treatment - but it does work. I feel like now people see the weight loss and not the marks on my arms and neck. A co-worker told me that she uses this as a moisturizer, so I tried it on my face and body.
