Dr Pixie:
This site was inundated, not surprisingly, with questions about periods. A lot of you asked, ‘well, when is it normal to start periods?’ It’s normal to start your periods any time between the age of eight and sixteen, and the average age is twelve.

Lots of you wondered about blood loss during periods—what’s normal? The average blood loss is between five and twelve teaspoons full. So it may seem like a lot, but it actually isn’t.

A lot of you seemed to be concerned about what you can and cannot do when you’re having a period. Can you go swimming, can you have sex? It’s absolutely fine to have sex when you’re having a period, there is no medical reason why you can’t. As regards swimming, in fact a lot of doctors recommend swimming as a way to alleviate period pain, so it’s totally okay to swim when you’re having a period.

Lots of you have questions about what can you do when you’re having a painful period? Very simply, you can go to the pharmacy and buy drugs like paracetamol or ibuprofen over the counter, which work very very well. If you’re having really problem periods, your GP may prescribe a contraceptive pill or other medication that would help the blood loss and the pain.

I'm on the combined pill and I was going to Start taking multivitamins and evening primrose oil tablets once daily. I need to know if taking evening primrose oil tabs won't affect my Pill as I researched that this herb does many things, one being hormonal balancing. Some say it that won't at all affect, others say there Ain't sufficient enough evidence! All research seems be from American. Has anybody taken these herbs whilst On the pill? And has it been ok! Iv been on this pill for four years with being on the mini pill 4 years before that. Thankyou

I'm nearly 17 and still have had no sign of a period and felt concerned as my 3 sisters, mother and grandmother started their period between the ages of 10 and 12. I went to the doctors and had a blood test for several different things and the results came back mainly positive but my hormone levels are 'abnormal'. I was wondering what this could possibly mean and what could possibly be wrong as I am obviously worried about infertility and have no clue about this sort of subject..

Hi, I came off the microgynon contraceptive pill in February of this year and I'm still yet to have a period since stopping taking it! I'm worried in case this means there's a problem. I'm definitely not pregnant and have taken a couple of tests to be positive but it's been 7months now and like I say I'm just worried and would like to know if I should be worried or carry on waiting to see when my period will come again?

Hi im 22 and i usually have light periods that last about 9 days i did go on the pill when i was 14 to regulate them and at 20 i went on the implant which totally messed them up and now im currently experiencing really really heavy flows but i think its normal as im on the implant. Im not a doctor so i cant say if your normal or not but i am a medical student so i would surgest going to your doctor to be put on the pill and sit you bf down and explain it all as well as tell him all ur feeling about how this makes u worried and you dont want to lose him etc. i hope i have helped but i defo think going to the docs whether it stops or not as they can get more of a background and also more of your symptoms.

It could be a hormone imbalance I had it like you out of the blue I just started bleeding all the time for no reason on and off. Ask your Dr if you can be checked just to make sure it's nothing serious. I just had to get a coil fitted and it sorted everything out. I only get a period once every 3 months and no pain at all before I always had chronic pain and heavy bleeding.
