Dr Pixie V/O: For 28 year old Theresa Jenkins her condition is relentless and she’s in need of a friendly ear.

Dr Christian: How can I help you?

Theresa: I seem to have infection in my ears all the time and it never seems to go.

Dr Christian: You’ve got stuff coming out of them?

Theresa: Yeah, I’ve got yuck in my ears now.

Dr Christian: Have you?

Theresa: Yeah.

Dr Christian: So there’s something for me to see, oh joy! Can you just sit up on the couch for me? You’re quite flaky all around the opening of the ear aren’t you, the ear hole. What I want to do is have a look in with this little thing, just let me know if its sore and I will stop, OK? Right, gosh, that’s quite a mess in there. You’ve got quite a lot of thick white gunky stuff. Yum! Let’s have a look on this side. Right, exactly the same. I’ve seen this quite a lot before and it usually turns out to be a fungus. Can I take a swab? Is that ok with you?

Theresa: That’s fine.

Dr Christian: Here we go. Pop it in now.

Theresa: Ow.

Dr Christian: Sorry. You all right?

Theresa: Yeah.

Dr Christian: They are very tender aren’t they? That’s what your full of. It’s not very nice is it?

Dr Pixie V/O: The swab is sent straight to microbiologist Val Edwards-Jones who leaves it to fester in a Petri dish for 48 hours.

Val: Well I can see what’s the matter with Theresa before I even open the plates here. She’s got a yeast, she’s got a candida and it’s that what’s causing her problem. Just look how heavy that is, got a really, really heavy growth. Characteristic smell, nice and white and creamy. Same sort of thing that you get causing thrush. Hopefully, the doctor will be able to treat this quite easily. So, she should be ok in a tick.

Dr Pixie V/O: Thrush is more likely to be found in the vagina but it’s just as easy to treat in the ear. A course of antibiotics will do the trick.

My father has perforated eardrums and suffers from tinnitus. He has been deaf for many years. Recently he has been getting a watery yellow sticky discharge from both ears, which when dried blocks both ears making his hearing aid useless. Please help.

I don't know if you already have by now, but yes, I'd definitely advise you that you should see your doctor as soon as possible, an ENT specialist for that matter. I have a blocked left ear too since December and as I went to the doctor, he told me it's because of ear infection (otitis media) and I was in pain due to the pus that was gathered in there. He cleaned my ear off the pus, and prescribed me antibiotics (Zinadol 500mg) and drops for my ear. It's been almost 5 weeks and I'm way better. The pain is gone but my ear is still a bit blocked. He told me it will take time for hearing loss to completely subside. In any case, see your doctor. It's the only way to make sure you're going to be fine, don't postpone it. Ear infections could cause permanent hearing loss if left untreated.

I've had an ear infection for 3 years.it's not at all painful but it smells quite bad. It happens at specific times In the day too, like between 10am to 1pm. I haven't been to a doctor because I don't have time to but can anyone help??

I've put up with a painful and blocked left ear for a week now hoping it would go away but last night I couldn't even chew my food as my jaw won't close on that side, but now I can't even get any medication because I have to wait 2 weeks to see a doctor!!!!! I now have to go to work in pain because my employer wants a doctors note. Is there anything I can do to get this sorted?

I've had an ear infection for 5 weeks now in my left ear. I previously had my first ever ear infection 2 months earlier. This recent infection was initially 100 times worse. After initially visiting the doctor i was prescribed amoxicillin. However, after 2 days my ear had got worse and i couldn't lift my head of the pillow and lots of discharge was coming out. Painkillers were doing nothing for the pain and i was crying with agony so i returned to the gp. My antibiotic was changed to co-amoxiclov, for which i have now had 3 x 7 day courses and I am starting to experience the side effects of antibiotics. I still have infection/pus behind ear drum(a nurse has looked) and i am due to return to doctors this week. Although i am in no where near as much pain as i initially was, I am concerned that the infection has failed to clear. Has anyone experienced anything similar? Did it eventually clear?

I had and have exactly the same thing, they too prescribed co-amoxiclav and gave me a "diluted" codeine drug to help with the pain. I had seizure like spasms which may be abnormal but I'm guessing it was something else, loss of balance and insane headaches, like no head turning, discharge and a very painful and sensitive left ear including the bone behind it. My ear cleared up but I could never remember how it was before in terms of hearing, my paranoia leads me to believe that the ear is not as good as it had been before the infection! A couple of months later, now, my ear is blocked all over again, it's frustrating, it's like hearing through fingers covering your ear. My left ear has no pain (weirdly) and is just blocked, in the beginning I was able to reposition and move my ear to somehow "unblock" it and hear again until it subliminally closed up, as if there's a very viscous liquid behind my ear drum, which there probably is. I'm looking for help but can't go GP or seek drastic help as its exam season and the exams are just randomly spotted all over the following tweets and so it's very awkward. Basically, I'm supporting you and giving you that community feeling as you have given me by letting me know that I'm not alone! Please get back to me if you went to check up and got a reply or any news. Thanks , C.

I have went to the doctor and been give amoxicillin. For my ear I have finished the then but still have strong pain in it after a five day course. Will this last or what shall I do I'm an adult thanks
